- Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
- Tom Scholz (Boston)
- Joe Satriani
- Angus Young (AC/DC)
- Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top)
- Tommy Emmanuel - great guitarist, but probably not known very well outside of Australia

What other guitarists do you rate? |

Having seen a number of other artists mentioned in various posts it got me wondering how much similarity or difference there is other guitarists that the
members here listen to. Here's some others that I seriously rate (apart from Knopfler who is at #1 for me).
What about you?? |

Here are the ones that mean the most to me: Robby Krieger (very underrated fingerpicker) Dick Dale (probably the direct opposite of MK) Hendrix Wes Montgomery
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXOrj7QAc8M) And the genius Jerry Reed (http://youtube.com/watch?v=qOGiW-y-Vhs)

I'll second Jerry Reed and Wes Montgomery and add Richard Thompson, Hendrix, SRV, Leo Kottke, Django, BB King, Albert King, Lightnin' Hopkins, Jerry
Donahue and Ry Cooder. Plus many more probably!

Here's a copy of examples of Tommy's work if you haven't seen him before:
Initiation: Plenty more in YouTube if you're interested. I recommend checking out 'The Hunt' and 'Day Tripper / Lady Madonna'. |

For me, music is more about melody & harmony than anything else. That's what makes Mark Knopfler my favorite, I think its because he follows the chord
progression very closely in his solos and that makes it so melodious. After MK, other guitarists I like listening to are:
- Joe Satriani - Carlos Santana - Eric Clapton |

There`s so many talented players with amazing technique these days its daunting.
What i really dig, is the Cool History of music, so my idols are the classics... Hank Marvin, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimi Page, Brian May, Dave Gilmour.... Knopfler has turned me on to the coolness of old blues, bluegrass and country, its a whole new world for me! But i prefer the guys who say things with their guitar than dudes that can just play a million notes at 180bpm. Don`t you just love music? lol! I do like to rave on.... |

I´ll second (most of) the guitarists mentioned above.
Eric Johnson is also superb, he's really got some serious technique, tone and feeling!! Mark will always remain my hero though. |

I saw Tommy Emmanuel live about 15 yearas ago.. playing in a pub. We turned up a bit late and couldnt see because everyone was standing on tables. I was
wondering who the other guitarist he had with him was when he asked everyone to get off the tables so those at the back could see.. I was rather stunned to see
there were NO other guitarists there and it was just him.. he is amazing, really amazing. However, I dont like his electric stuff.. to many effects for a man
that really doesnt need them, on an acoustic he is possibly the greatest of all.
I saw the Shadows in 1985 and 1987, Dad was always a big fan and bought a Fender strat in 82 when I started learning so I was lucky to have that influence that early,, less is more! And play a note rather than just hit one. I saw the Brothers in arms tour in 1985 and as a 14 year old it was mind blowing.. saw a lot at that concert, and not only the music! Always liked Clapton and the first thing I did when I got a job in 1990 was buy a Clapton strat.. its my only electric guitar and Ive gigged with it for years, its like a mate now. I was lucky enough to see Clapton live about 2 years ago.. one of the most impressive things was, apart from the amazing Strat sounds, the voice, the music, the strat sounds ( oh did I mention that already? ) was that he had 2 guitarists with him that were every bit as good as him, and they had equal solo time.. Clapton has no ego on stage at all.. it was more a celebration of the guitar than a Clapton concert.. incredible. I saw the Who a few months ago at the Aussie grand Prix.. impressive.. mainly because of the stage and show.. oh, and again, great Strat sounds.. |

Yeah man, i saw Eric at the Hunter Valley wineries in March! Talk about "no ego", all he said in the way of chat was "Good Evening" and
"Thank You" with 20 songs in between!!!! This is a man who doesn`t feel the need to bullshit to crowds, it was awesome, and the first time i`d seen
Clapton.
Good to see another Aussie on board. Welcome |

Actually I've got something to add on the stage presence thing.
I've seen bands where their music is good but the members stand stock still like statues, and whats more, blur blur face as well. The only way to make your audience groove along is to make the performance a happening one. Not saying you have to jump around, lick your guitar strings or what (because moving too much like some big show will offend your bandmates, AND your audience will be turned off), but at least move with the music. At least don't look like you're trying to be Sir Stamford Raffles at the Singapore River. Actually I don't really see anything wrong with tuning your guitar on-stage, as long as its soft and not very noticeable. Soundcheck can come after all instruments are tuned. If you are playing electric and won't be able to hear your strings while everyone else is tuning as well (or the audience is quite noisy), simple. Get a digital clip-on tuner that will not only be more accurate, but also runs on vibration so outside noise does not affect. __________________ "The beauty of the old hymns." _____________________________________________________ Best 10 Acne Cures mighty milk |
